The Life Of John Septimus Roe

John Septimus Roe was born at Newbury Berkshire on the 8th of May 1797. he was the seventh son of his family. When ten he was sent to Christs Hospital School where he studied hard to be a school teacher. He was selected for service in the Royal Navy. John entered the Royal Navy on the 11th June 1813.Over the next year Ribbon was engaged in a blockade of the French coast. When the Napoleonic wars ended Ribbon returned to England and Roe was appointed as a midshipman. On the 4th of February 1817the admiralty appointed him to the survey service in New South Wales.On the 4th of February 1817 the admiralty appointed him to the surveying service NSW.
John Septimus Roe conducted Numerous exploring expeditions between 1828 and 1849
In June 1829 he explored the swan and canning river.In June 1829 he explored the Swan and Canning river. In January 1830 he explored the country Leschenault.
EXPLORATIONS
John Septimus Roe was involved in a lot of explorations throughout Western Australia like:
· The Swan and Canning Rivers
· The country around the Leschenault, Collie, Ferguson and Preston Rivers
· Cape Naturaliste and Geographe Bay
· The area around Albany, Doubtful Island Bay, Torbay, Wilsons Inlet and Kojonup
· Pinjarra and Bunbury
· The Hay and Sleeman Rivers
· The Great Southern Expedition in October and November 1835 where the country between Perth and Albany was explored by two different routes in order to decide the best route between the two towns
· The discovery and initial survey of the Peel Harbour and Warnbro Sound

He also established the Sandalford Winery in the Swan Valley which is still in existence today.



DEATH
In 1871 John Septimus Roe retired at the age of 73.
He had served the colony for over 40 years. He was blind in one eye which made life difficult. He died at the age of 81 on the 28th of May 1878.JSPOT.jpg
